Lisa Pogge-von Strandmann wins Poster Award of the German Physiological Society

Congratulations to Lisa Pogge von Strandmann for receiving a poster award during the 98th Annual Meeting of the German Physiological Society which was held together with the Swiss and Austrian Physiological Societies from 30.9.-2.10.2019 at the University of Ulm. Her poster was entitled “Insulin-like growth factor 1 and insulin have different effects on macrophage polarization influencing cardiac regeneration after myocardial infarction”. Lisa received a MD student fellowship of the IRTG1902.


Kim Krott wins Poster Award at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis

Congrats to Kim Krott! He wons the Poster Award for „The active recruitment of red blood cells during hemostasis and thrombus formation“  at International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis and 65th Annual Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) Meeting in Melbourne, Australia on  July 6 – 10, 2019


Phil-Torben Müller - 1st Poster Prize Winner at the Medical Research School Düsseldorf Symposium

Phil-Torben Müller, medical doctoral student of the International Research Training Group 1902 (IRTG 1902) - Gödecke work group, won the first prize for his poster at the Medical Research School Düsseldorf Symposium in May. His poster entitled "Inducible Inactivation of AKT1 and AKT2 in Adult Mouse Cardiomyocytes" was one of 95 poster entries. Congratulations Phil-Torben!

MIT European Career Fair 2019, Boston

The IRTG 1902 and SFB 1116 took part in the MIT European Career Fair in Boston on February 16th, 2019 as part of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) organized presentation of 53 research groups under the banner of “Research in Germany”.

5th Summer/Autumn School 2018 at University of Virginia, Charlottesville

The 5th Autumn School of HHU and UVA collaboration partners was held at University of Virginia from November 29 to 30, 2018. A two-day scientific program including fascinating talks and intensive discussion during poster presentations. The Darden Business School at UVA provided a wonderful setting not only for the exchange of knowledge, but also for the development of new projects and networking of the partner PIs and students.


We thank everyone involved in the organization process, PIs and students and especially Paul Orange, who organized a perfect Autumn school! We look forward to another successful UVA/HHU IRTG 1902 meeting in Düsseldorf in September 2019!

DAAD RISE Internship students at IRTG1902 Projects in Düsseldorf

This summer the International Research Training Group 1902 had the pleasure to welcome three exchange students from University of Virginia (UVA), USA and Simon Fraser University (SFU), Canada.

They were all sponsored by the DAAD RISE program (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) and had opportunity to get an insight into the laboratories here in Düsseldorf and build up a network with various work groups.

We say thank you for spending time with us and are looking forward to new collaborations and future exchange programs.


"Living in Germany for three months was a phenomenal adventure. I wanted to gain research experience in an international setting as well as travel and immerse myself in a different culture. With that being said, experiencing Germany's rich history and art was what I found most impressive during my stay. Now that I am back in Canada, I miss relaxing along the Rhine with the wonderful people I met in Düsseldorf. Germany will always feel like a home away from home and I know I'll be back some day!"

Philipp Jakobs has completed his PhD!

On July 4th, 2018 Philipp Jakobs successfully defended his doctoral thesis at Heinrich Heine University. He spent three years working on his research in Professor Jojo Haendeler laboratory at the IUF, Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine.

During his 6 month exchange with the collaborating laboratory of Professor Norbert Leitinger at the University of Virginia (UVA), USA he investigated the influence and regulation of thioredoxin-1 in in vivo mouse models.

Team Building IRTG1902 and SFB1116 on the water

The doctoral researchers of the research training groups enjoyed a team building event on lake Unterbach. In the hot weather the time on the lake was a welcome break from the Lab. The 5-person canoes provided a perfect opportunity to get to know each other and to work together in friendly competition against other teams.
