Impressions from our RISE Students in Summer 2021

Zixiao An, Richard Peckham and Gabby Besse

We were pleased to be able to welcome three exchange students from the USA to the IRTG 1902 in Düsseldorf this summer.  All three undergraduate students came to us as part of the RISE Program.  Here are some impressions from their stay:

  • I am so glad I was able to join IRTG as a cardiovascular physiology research intern at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf! My summer spent in the Gödecke lab was unlike any other. I was able to integrate my prior scientific knowledge and lab experience with novel techniques to design, implement, troubleshoot, and find success in my project focused on the IGF-1 pathway in cardiac tissue. Whether it was isolating RNA and protein for my Western blots, synthesizing cDNA for qPCR's, or shivering with excitement as I cryosectioned my tissue, I loved every second of the intellectual challenge and ownership my internship presented. At the same time, equally formative were the moments of serendipitous cultural exchange with my German lab mates turned good friends. We chatted about our projects, our past times, and everything in between, all with the beautiful backdrop of Düsseldorf and the Rhine for the most memorable summer yet. (Zixiao An )
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the DAAD RISE program and my placement in Dr. Stegbauer’s lab this summer! In the lab, I’ve learned from incredible scientists and had the chance to develop my individual research skills. Outside of the lab, I’ve gotten to enjoy summer in Düsseldorf and have learned about German culture and language. I’m so grateful for everything this summer has given me, and couldn’t imagine a better experience! (Gabrielle Besse)

  • Researching in Dusseldorf has been the experience of a lifetime. I have learned much about vasculature and refined many lab techniques like PCR, CLD, and western blotting while working full-time in the Cortese-Krott Lab. All of the PhD students have been very welcoming, and I enjoy every second I spend working with them. (Richard Peckham)
